Butter Lantern Festival

The Butter Lantern Festival falls on the 15th day of the first Tibetan month. It is the climax day of celebration of the Tibetan new year. During the daytime, they eat cat's ear and people go to pray in temples and monasteries. In the evening there is a lantern show.

The lantern show is held in the evening and last all night until dawn. Various giant butter and butter sculptures, in forms of auspicious symbols and figures, are displayed on Barkhor Street, such as flowers, birds, and animals, Large scale butter sculptures about stories of Buddha, Princess Wencheng, Han story of "Monkey" and also Scaffoldings several stories high will be erected at many monasteries and thousands of lamps will be hung on them.

People keep singing and dancing in great joy throughout the festive night. The Butter Lantern Festival is believed to be the happiest festival in Tibet.,
