Lhasa Gonggar Airport |
Lhasa Gonggar Airport is an airport that serves the city of Lhasa, Tibet, China. It is located about 45 kilometers (about 28 miles) south-southwest of Lhasa, on the right (southern) banks of the Yarlung Zangbo River.
Lhasa Gonggar is located more than 3500 metres above sea level, making it one of the highest airports in the world. Its runway, at 4000 metres (4374 yards), is designed to handle wide-body aircraft in the thin Tibetan air. The airport began operation in 1956 with flights to Beijing and Chengdu commencing that March. Recent addition included the expansion of the existing terminal in 2004.
It is also connected to the rest of China (see below) which includes cities such as Beijing, Chengdu, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Chongqing, Xian, Xining, Kunming, Diqing and Chamdo Region and an international route connects Kathmandu, Nepal and Lhasa. The airport is so far from the city because no flat ground could be near the premises of the city.
