Xijiang Miao Village |
Xijiang Miao Village, known as the biggest Miao Ethnic village in the world, is about 37 kilometers from Leishan County and about 80 kilometers away from Kaili. It takes about an hour to travel to Xijiang from Kaili by automobile. For centuries the Miao have settled amidst this tranquil foothills and valleys undulating away from their revered mountain. A visit to Xijiang Miao Village and gain a glimpse into their culture has become one of China's most unique travel experiences.
Xijiang Miao Village contains many examples of Miao architecture, which is known for its harmony with nature. Many of the inhabitants live in a type of house known as diao jiao lou. These are wooden houses with tile roofs and stilt-like supports built on hillsides. And people walking on the farmer's paths can see the nice scenery that includes a river valley with terraced fields, intricate wooden houses built in their architectural style, and farmer's working the land with their oxen.
The travelers to Xijiang Miao Village are amazed at the elegant and glittering silver ornaments worn by Miao women during the holidays. The Miao women wear large neck rings, necklaces, earrings, bracelets, beads and sheaths of engraved silver for festival days. Senior Miao women wear their long dark hair coiled up in neat buns on the top of their heads while the younger Miao women prefer to adorn them with large colorful plastic or bone combs and pretty flowers. Each woman has her traditional clothing, head dress and other jeweler which is worn at special festivals throughout the year.
Xijiang Miao Village is also a center for grand Miao festivals and celebrations. Famous festivals include the Lusheng Festival, the Miao New Year and Sisters' Meal Festival and so on. Songs and dance are a major part of these festivals for tourists to enjoy. |
