Guilin Sun and Moon Pagodas

The Sun and Moon Pagodas are located on Banyan Lake in Guilin. The taller of the two, at nine storeys high, the Sun pagoda is the tallest copper pagoda in the world. The moon pagoda stands seven storeys high. There is a wonderful walk along the lake's edge which at night is just magic and is popular with locals and tourists alike.

Dating back to the Tang Dynasty, when they were part of a city moat, that subsequently became a lake within the city, Banyan Lake (Rong Hu) and Fir Lake (Shan Hu) are an oasis of calm in the centre of Guilin.

Named for the large banyan tree on it's shore, Banyan Lake lies to the west of the Yang (Sun) Bridge and Fir Lake, named for the trees on it's shore, lies to the east.

The two lakes together were often referred to as Round Lake. A zigzag bridge leads to the mid-lake Isle, which is dotted with long corridors, waterside pavilions and ancient buildings.
