West Street, Yangshuo
West Street is the oldest street, which has a history of more than 1400 years, is situated at the center of Yangshuo County in Yangshuo. West Street has become the biggest "foreign language center" in China since the 1980's. About 100,000 foreigners come here on their travels or to attend advanced studies every year. Because some times foreigners even outnumber Chinese there, West Street is also called "foreigners' street".
The street is completely paved with marble, a typical example of a southern China street. Foreigners love the simple courtyard-like setting style and mix of culture here. West Street is modern and fashionable, nearly every store has bilingual shop signs, and more than 20 stores have been opened by foreigners who have settled here. Most Chinese are speak English here. English has become the language for daily use.
West Street is a fantastic place to relax and throw away your pressures and burdens, whether you are foreigners or Chinese. Its calm and peace in the morning will give a calmer view toward life, while its trendy and modern evening agitate your feelings.
Visiting West Street, you will be surrounded by an array of traditional folk and amazing international elements. Various craftworks shops, painting and calligraphy stores, cafes, and so on.
West Street does not only satisfy you visually. You will be tempted by foods from all over the world: ciba (a kind of Chinese rice cake) and rice noodle of Yangshuo, authentic Italian coffee, banana cake, Western style food, etc. Traveling to West Street is an experience to be with the landscape, with the people, with the soul, and with yourself.
