Nanjing - Bell Pavilion |
The park is near the Drum Tower in downtown Nanjing. It was built in 1382, and the scale of the tower's construction was so large that it was rare to see in China. The Drum Tower has two levels. The first is arch-shaped ceiling without girders as support, and the second level is built of layers of pretty eaves, with lots of splendid carved sculptures like flying dragons and dancing phoenixes. On this level, it has a time telling room for greeting the coming of king and queen. Time telling is done by using sticks to hit hard the big Chinese drum. Later a giant stele was erected here, so the name, Drum Tower was changed to Stele Tower. But by the local custom, it has still been called the Drum Tower.
At the northeast side of the tower, it stands the Big Bell Pavilion. A purple-colored bronze bell installed in it is made in 1388. The appearance of the bell is very good and the sound is so resonant. Patterns of petals of lotus flower are beautifully cast on the top of the bell. The rack for supporting the bell is artistically carved with cloud lines and wave coils. "The Bell has been Made in an Auspicious Day in 29th Year (1396) of Hong Wu (a name for years of the Ming Dynasty)" is inscribed on the bell in amazing Chinese calligraphy.
