Qiantang River Bridge

Qiantang River Bridge, as the vital communication link, spans the Qiatang River from south to north to connect the major railways between Shanghai, Hangzhou and other southern provinces. The bridge was commissioned on 8 August 1934 and opened to traffic on 26 September, 1937. It was designed by Mao Yisheng, a great Chinese engineer.

Qintang River Bridge was the first such bridge, the double-decked bridge ever built by the Chinese. Pagoda of Six Harmonies commands a broad view of the Qiantang River where the bridge looks like a rainbow above the river, creating magnificent scenery.

As a young engineer and pioneering bridge builder in China, Mao Yisheng had to do the unthinkable. To stop the approach of troops from Japan in 1937, Mao destroyed the old Qiantang River Bridge near Hangzhou, which he had helped to build. After World War II was over, Mao supervised the reconstruction of the bridge.
