What to see in Xi'an |
Xi'an is the city you can find most Chinese elements. World-famous Terra Cotta warriors, national best preserved City Walls, Bell and Drum Towers and Muslim Quarters all remind Xi'an was the ancient China capitals for longest period. Luckily this city still retains its charm and its Chinese character and traditions. It's a easy city to go locals as well. You still get the old man playing Mahjong on the streets, you get the kids with the red neckerchiefs coming to and from school. Xi'an is a very compact city where you wouldn't lost way. Most of the sight seeing places are in the walking distance inside of the walls. Xi'an covers an area of 9,983 square kilometers and has population of 7 million. So far, Xian enjoys equal fame with Athens, Cairo, and Rome as one of the four major ancient civilization capitals. |
Terra-cotta Warriors China's Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses were arguably the most significant archaeological excavations of the past few decades. Discovered outside the town of Xian, the well-preserved artifacts originally were used as decoration for the tomb of Qin Shi Huang, who was likely the first emperor of China (around 220 B.C.). Sometimes only twenty or thirty warriors were on touring in different countries. However, in the museum where they were discovered you can find thousands of them are standing in lines. |
Muslim Quarter The Muslim Quarters feature a mix of Chinese and Islamic cultures where small alleyways have been turned into marketplaces. The street food here is good, as with all Muslim areas, and along with the vast array of tourist goods on sale. Kids play on the streets, people sit outdoors for much of the summer, living their lives out in the open, and there is the constant smell of cooking food, vegetables and "life". This is a busy, noisy, friendly place. |
Great Moaque Within the Muslim Quarter, there is one huge, beautiful mosque, called the Xi'an Great Mosque. As in much of the Islamic quarter, it all seems very chaotic but once you do actually find the Great Mosque you will find some measure of peace. There are not so many bus tour groups here so you can wander the garden-like compound without having to be interrupted by a tour group. |
Ancient City Wall It's the most complete city wall that has survived in China, as well being one of the largest ancient military defensive systems in the world. The City Wall in Xian is that it gives visitor a sense of history in Xian. It's romantic, large and beautiful. At night, or even during the day, it creates a real atmosphere of ancient China and what is a fast growing modern city. On the wall you can stroll along or you can rent a bicycle. They also have tandem bikes, so you and a friend can enjoy a nice day cycling along the city wall, enjoying the sights of Xi'an. |
