Shanghai Transportation

Shanghai is a world famous metropolitan city and the essential transportation hubs in China. You can easily go to Shanghai by taking international flights and cruise ships as well as domestic flights, trains, buses and ferry boats. Shanghai has highly developed infrastructure, including a convenient public transportation network. The city has various links to the outside. Today you can easily travel to Shanghai from not only the adjacent cities of Suzhou, Nanjing and Hangzhou, but also the distant cities such as Beijing, Xian, Guangzhou, and Hong Kong. Many cities in foreign countries also enjoy convenient transportation links with Shanghai. You can travel there by air, train, long-distance bus, or ship.

By Air
There are many direct international flights that are available from Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Hongqiao Airport to major cities all over the world.

Pudong International Airport
There are direct flights to many international cities from Shanghai. Shanghai is the only city in China to have two international airports. Pudong is the new international airport and most international airlines now fly in and out of here, and it is located 55 km from the city center.

Hongqiao International Airport
It is located in the west of Shanghai, 13 kms from the downtown area. It is an old airport now mainly for most domestic flights.

By train:
Shanghai is at the center of an important rail network and there are daily trains to Xi'an, Beijing, Kunming, Guilin, Qingdao and almost all provincial capitals from which travelers can choose further transportation to their destination. There is also a train to Kowloon in Hong Kong. The main train station (Xinkezhan) is in the north of the city.

By Taxi:
There are many taxi companies in Shanghai. Taxi service is available 24 hours a day. It is the most common means of transportation to get around Shanghai. But the speed is rather slow during rush hours.

By Bus:
There are more than 1,100 bus lines in Shanghai. Buses are often packed to the hilt and at times, impossible to board. The closest thing to revolutionary fervor in Shanghai today is the rush-hour bus ambushes.
