Gulf of Tonkin, also called Beibu Gulf, located in the Northwest of the South China Sea, is a large semi-enclosed gulf. The east of the Gulf of Tonkin are Leizhou peninsula and Hainan Island in China. Its north is China's Guangxi Autonomous Region, and its west is Viet Nam. It is connected with the South China Sea by the south.
Continental shelf width of 260 of the Beibu Gulf, increasing depths from shore to the central part, maximum depth of 80 meters. There are abundant deposits of oil and natural gas resources as well as marine fishery resources in this area. Gulf of Tonkin is located in the tropical and subtropical zones, often affected by typhoons attack.
