The Dazu Stone Sculptures |
Together with Dwen-huang, Yun-guang and Lung-men Buddhism carvings Dazu Stone Sculptures is considered one of the four ancient Buddhism carvings in China. Their four create the art of outstanding ancient Chinese stone carvings. Dazu has been inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1999.
Including all the Buddhism caves in Dazu County, the carvings started at early Tang Dynasty lasting over 1000 years till Manchu Dynasty. The statues are mainly about Buddhism but Taoism and Confucianism also got involved more or less. There totally are 10,000 of them found at 74 different sites all around Dazu county. Bao-ding and Bay-shan are the most well known two among them.
